I’ve mentioned before that Chef is currently flat out busy with setting up a new restaurant local to where we live. It’s exciting and been brilliant to see the progress of the refurbishment over the last few weeks. However, it’s been hectic as he draws closer to the opening. The poor man is exhausted and every evening he’s got a list of things he needs me to do to help out. So while it’s exciting, the last few weeks have not exactly been easy. Update a Family Favourite

My lovely, darling daughter was home from uni for the weekend. I think her primary reason was to get me to pay for her homemade die job to be professionally fixed at the hairdressers, but also to get some decent food. For once she didn’t bring a pile of dirty laundry!

After a big dose of student food, I wanted to treat her to a few nice dinners. Like most teens, she’s eats a lot of pasta, rice and noodles and I wanted to give her a break from mince (ground beef for my US readers) which she is heartily sick of. Continue reading “Update a Family Favourite”

Love is like Chocolate…phenomenally delicious

It’s rare that you come across someone who doesn’t like chocolate. I eat it but I could live without it. Then of course there’s the big debate-milk or dark. I’m definitely on the dark side. Whenever I eat milk chocolate it just tastes like a lump of butter in my mouth but each to their own.

Special Valentine’s Supper

Chef has declared that he’d like to cook his favourite dinner for Valentine’s Day. Steak. Let’s just say I wasn’t consulted on this or asked if I had any preferences.  To be fair, it won’t just be any steak. There’s some strange looking fungi in the fridge that will be part of a sauce. Yummy!

I should add that we NEVER go out for Valentine’s Day. This is because Chef deems the over-inflated prices that restaurants charge for a reduced and often cheaper product to be on the heavy side of crazy. I’m more than happy about that because the food at home is better than what we get in most places. A very special kind of pancake for Pancake Day

My 2016 kitchen calendar lists all sorts of holidays and fiestas around the world. With Valentines Day coming up, I almost overlooked one of my favourites – Pancake Day which is really Shrove Tuesday. Lots of countries do their own version of pancakes and I think I love most of them.

This being the case, I’ve no idea why I only make them a few times a year. My daughter is a dab hand at making the luscious thick American pancakes and whenever she’s amenable, I try and persuade her into making a batch but I thought I’d give this little twist on pancakes a try. What can you do in a year?

There’s nothing I love more than browsing through a magazine. My hairdresser’s salon is like my version of Mecca. It’s cheaper for me to get my hair done than it would be to buy all the magazines I manage to get through during a root colour and a trim.

Inevitably, I find myself drawn to the recipes at the back. .I stash the recipe away somewhere with vague plans to cook it at some point  (I should add, I only do this to the magazines I’ve paid for). Sounding familiar so far? Continue reading “What can you do in a year?”
